In the beginning of March 2024 I took the final artistic Master’s exam at my home university in Vienna, which includes a choreography that is created over the space of one semester.
My work is called THE PATTERN IS MOVEMENT IS and is inspired by our breath, how it influences our movements, but also how different moves influence the breathing, how loudly or quietly we can breathe, … and then incorporates parts of the music by Caroline Shaw, which is an Allemande, a baroque dance music. I used the musical score and translated parts of it directly into movement and the rhythm of dance as well as using guided improvisations with my dancers to create movements. During my research on baroque social dances like the Allemande I found square dance calls, which Caroline Shaw used in her lyrics, that were used as a guide for the dancers to know what to dance next, which I included in a varied way into the walking part of the dance as well as the directions I let my dancers move.
Music used: excerpts from Partita For 8 Voice, I. Allemande, composed by Caroline Shaw.
The choreography has only been shown in a non-commercial context at the University for Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (MDW)
